Rules of Tajweed

Tajwid is the knowledge of the rules that define how to read the Quran and how to apply the rules while reciting.

Without learning tajwid you can’t be able to pronounce the words and letters of the Quran correctly.

What is Tajwid?

Tajwid is an Arabic word and the literal meaning of the word tajwid is ‘to do better and to improve. The root word of tajwid is ‘jayyid’ or you can say the word tajwid is derived from jayyid which means ‘Good’.

Quran:

Allah says: “Those to whom We gave the Book recite it as it should be recited, they are the ones that believe therein.” (2:121)

Hadith:

In Sunan Abu Dawood (Hadith # 1468): Al-Bara Ibn e Azab (RadiAllahu Anhu) narrated the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him) said: “Beautify the Quran with your voices.”

What if we do not read Quran with correct pronunciation?

Quran is the holy book that Allah Almighty has revealed on His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him). This holy book includes recommendations, rules, and knowledge that help us to live life according to the commands of Allah. If we do not read Quran with proper tajwid, then the meaning of the words will be changed. We will not get rewards for wrong reading. That’s why we should concentrate on learning about tajwid. It's a very sensitive matter, if we do a mistake even in a letter of the Quran, the whole meaning of the sentence will be changed completely. The sound of each letter of Arabic is different. For example, ‘seen’ and ‘saad’ have different sounds. ‘Seen’ is light while ‘saad’ is heavy. We have to read Quran in our prayers also. If we do not read with correct pronunciation then our prayers will also be considered wrong. Allah Almighty says in Quran: “And recite the Quran with measured recitation”.
